The journal Science, August 6, 1999 issue describes a demonstration of six-way, real time language translation via computer. Six people in six countries speaking six different languages carried on a spontaneous conversation electronically without any human interpreters on July 22nd. It was sponsored by the Consortium for Speech Translation Advanced Research (C-STAR) using video links. It appears to have worked flawlessly. They have a website: www.c-star.org.

Also described in New York Times newspaper article, July 29, 1999, “Toward Better Communication Across the Language Barrier,” by Lisa Guernsey.
